X6Cr13 Product Description

Overview

X6Cr13 is a low-carbon chromium ferritic stainless steel containing about 13% chromium. This datasheet presents the material within the Werkstoff-Nummer (DIN / EN) designation system.

With about 13% chromium and low carbon, 1.4000 is the lower-carbon version of the 13% chromium martensitic grade and, unlike that grade, cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It shows resistance to steam, alkaline solutions, dilute acids (nitric, formic, oxalic), salts (nitrates, nitrites, carbonates) and hot petroleum fumes, fuels, alcohols, ethers, food products, lubricants, water and oils — adequate at low concentrations and low temperatures. Being ferritic and low-nickel, it is magnetic and offers good formability. It does not show resistance to intergranular corrosion before or after welding.

Typical applications include rectification (distillation) columns, cracking pipes, heat exchangers, machinery and food-industry equipment parts, and pressure-vessel linings.

1. Physical Properties

Property Value Unit

2. Chemical Composition (wt %)

Element Symbol Min % Max % Role in Alloy
Iron Fe Balance Base element
Chromium Cr 12.0 14.0 Corrosion / oxidation resistance
Manganese Mn 1.00 Deoxidiser
Silicon Si 1.00 Deoxidiser
Nickel Ni Residual
Carbon C 0.08 Low (non-hardening)
Phosphorus P 0.040 Residual impurity
Sulphur S 0.015 Residual impurity

3. Mechanical Properties

Annealed (+A) condition, per EN 10088-2 for W.Nr. 1.4000.

Condition Property Value
Annealed Tensile strength (Rm) 400–600 MPa
Annealed 0.2% proof strength (Rp0.2) ≥220 MPa
Annealed Elongation (A5) ≥20 %
Annealed Hardness ≤200 HB
Elastic modulus 220 GPa

Values per EN 10088-2; not hardenable by heat treatment. Confirm against the inspection certificate (EN 10204).

4. Corrosion Resistance

Environment Performance Notes
Atmospheric / general Good Adequate at low concentrations / temperatures
Steam / alkaline solutions Good Resists steam and dilute alkalis
Dilute acids (nitric, formic, oxalic) Moderate At low concentrations
Salts (nitrates, carbonates) Moderate At low concentrations
Intergranular corrosion Not resistant Before or after welding

Corrosion resistance is adequate in mildly corrosive media at low concentrations and temperatures; the grade is not resistant to intergranular corrosion.

5. Heat Treatment

A low-carbon, non-hardening grade; cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Properties are set by annealing.

Anneal Heat to approximately 750–820 °C and cool slowly. The low-carbon composition avoids martensite formation. Avoid prolonged exposure near 475 °C (embrittlement).

6. Weldability and Joining

Weldable; the low carbon limits heat-affected-zone hardening. However the grade is not resistant to intergranular corrosion after welding; use a stabilized or austenitic filler where corrosion resistance of the weld is critical.

Welding Process Applicability Filler / Consumable
GTAW / TIG Good Matching or austenitic (309) for ductility
GMAW / MIG Good Matching or austenitic filler
SMAW / stick Good Matching or 309 electrode

Austenitic fillers give a more ductile, corrosion-resistant weld where required.

7. Machinability and Fabrication

Machining Guidelines

Parameter Recommendation
Machinability Good; similar to other ferritic grades
Work hardening Low rate — good formability
Coolant Ample flood coolant

Forming Processes

Process Notes
Cold forming Good — bending, roll forming, drawing
Hot forming ~1100–800 °C; anneal afterward

8. Applications

Industry Typical Components Key Requirements
Oil & coke Rectification columns, cracking pipes Steam / petroleum-fume resistance
Heat transfer Heat exchangers Mild corrosion resistance
Food industry Machinery and equipment parts Corrosion resistance + formability
Pressure vessels Vessel linings Corrosion resistance
